Towering over Jersey City’s Hilltop neighborhood, the Hudson County Courthouse is a building many locals hope they never have to enter. But the hulking Beaux-Arts structure isn’t just home to plaintiffs and defendants; it’s a reminder of the city’s past and a symbol of what can happen when historical preservation is done right.

Next week, serial restaurateur Mat Kopec will open his third Jersey City outpost in the former La Conguita space on Grove Street. Sad as it was to see La Conguita go, the neighborhood couldn’t have asked for a more worthy replacement.

Modera Lofts, formerly the 110-year-old Butler Brothers warehouse is an ambitious 366-unit loft building in the Power House Arts District.
