One of Downtown Jersey City’s most prominent developments will be getting a new restaurant from an acclaimed ownership group as a new endeavor from the team behind GupShup has set their sights west of the Hudson River.
Per a public notice, a company named Grand Trunk Hospitality LLC has applied to Jersey City’s Alcoholic Beverage Control seeking to transfer a plenary retail consumption license to “space B” at 25 Columbus Drive. The address is home to the Haus25 tower, which is owned by Veris Residential.
The company seeking the license transfer says they will be trading as Punjab Meat House and a big name is behind the endeavor. The business is 100% registered to Ahtesham Rizvi, who runs GupShup in Manhattan’s Gramercy neighborhood.
Per Eater, GupShup opened in 2018 and serves Bombay-style street food in a more upscale space. Their creative dishes are accompanied by Indian-inspired cocktails like a rum mango lassi or a Goan sunrise with vodka, cucumber, basil, and green chartreuse.
GupShup has won over fans including Jimmy Fallon, who is regularly seen dining at the restaurant and brought his Tonight Show crew in for a segment three years ago.
In terms of their Jersey City venture, the retail space where the license would be transferred to is on the Montgomery Street side of the Haus25 building. The 6,017 square feet has been subdivided according to a listing from Veris Residential, with 2,245 square feet being listed as “in lease” despite the brochure not naming a specific tenant.
An inquiry Jersey Digs placed to GupShup regarding the liquor license transfer and plans for the property has not been answered. The license transfer could be heard by Jersey City’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board during their next meeting on January 16.
The planned Punjab Meat House will be joining an outpost of Meximodo at Haus25, which will be taking up residence on the Columbus Drive portion of the building. That eatery, with its sprawling selection of tequila, launched their first location in Metuchen earlier this fall.
