A unique development looking to add a brewery to Hoboken’s landscape has been given the green light as the northwest fringes of the city continue to grow.

During their May 7 meeting, Hoboken’s Planning Board approved a plan to revamp 1415 Adams Street. Jersey Digs was the first outlet to reveal details on the project just about a year ago, which would replace a one-story garage and vacant lot.

The development is being spearheaded by William Schmitt, who owns Schmitty’s (formerly The Backyard Bar) and Schmitt Capital. Designed by MVMK Architecture, the 1415 Adams Street development would include a narrow portion of a Grand Street property along the middle of that block.

The approved building sports an industrial look and is set to rise five stories and 80 feet in height. The brewery component would feature 26-foot ceilings including a mezzanine level with ample space for beer fermentation areas and associated tasting rooms.

The Grand Street side of the building features a bi-fold window on the ground floor to allow for seasonal outdoor seating during the warmer months. The second floor will feature additional seating for the brewery plus office space.

The rest of the development is set to consist of offices and small artisan spaces spanning 1,500 square feet to 2,800 square feet. A roof deck is included in the plan and would be accessible by patrons of the brewery.

Schmitt noted during a community meeting last year that his group hasn’t decided if they will be the future operator of the brewery or if a joint venture is in the cards. A groundbreaking date for the project has not yet been announced.

The approval of the brewery project by the Planning Board comes just days after Hoboken’s zoning board rejected a plan for a food hall along Clinton Street. Both developments did not include any on-site parking component, but the brewery project is situated in the North End Redevelopment Plan.
