A restaurant that has operated in Hoboken for over 26 years was recently given the green light to open a two-level speakeasy that looks to operate under the name Baby Girl.
During a special meeting of Hoboken’s Planning Board on June 27, approvals were granted to overhaul a former tattoo parlor at 938 Washington Street. The space is directly connected to Anthony David’s, a popular restaurant run by Chef Anthony Pino at the corner of 10th and Bloomfield streets.
Anthony David’s has been given the greenlight to expand their liquor license into the neighboring former tattoo parlor space, which will operate under a separate name. The restaurant was given a conditional use approval to operate a Class II Bar at the property, which will have a small bar on the ground floor partially visible from street level.
Taking advantage of Hoboken’s recent overhaul allowing below-grade retail uses in non-flood areas, the basement of the property will boast a speakeasy accessible via stairwell with space for 24 patrons. The space will be a true basement with no windows, aiming to provide a low-key spot for a cocktail and company.
According to testimony given by Chef Pino during the meeting, the endeavor is tentatively slated to be called Baby Girl. The business is looking to provide dine in small bites and cocktails, with food coming in from the neighboring Anthony David’s kitchen.
An inquiry Jersey Digs placed to Anthony David’s inquiring about the Baby Girl plans has thus far gone unanswered. The planned bar, in true speakeasy fashion, might be trying to keep a low-profile, as submitted plans indicate that signage for the business will be limited to one small emblem projected off an awning.
While the opening timeline for Baby Girl is unclear, speakeasies are popping up all around Hudson County these days. Boots & Bones opened Under The Boot last year in Jersey City, followed just months later by 143 Social down the street. Another speakeasy-style venue named Don’t Tell Liv is also in the works along Jersey City’s Newark Avenue.
