For years, bicycle-sharing systems have existed on and off in some urban parts of New Jersey, with Citi Bike still operating in parts of Jersey City and expanding into Hoboken soon, JerseyBike serving several Hudson County municipalities until October 2020, Zagster previously offering bikes in Asbury Park, and Ofo briefly operating in Camden in 2018.

Now, a suburb in Union County is looking to get a bike-share program of its own.

The Township of Union has issued a request for bike-share proposals and could enter into a one-year agreement should a contractor be selected.

The RFP that was released by the municipal government says that they are looking for at least three stations with 10 bicycles each to be installed at locations around Union that they determine.

“All operations and maintenance related to the bike share program shall be included in the cost of the service,” the document notes in part, adding that “the bike share vendor that is selected will be responsible for providing and installing all equipment.”

The RFP states that proposals will be evaluated based on criteria such as pricing structure, cost, the ease of the rental and payment app, local support and maintenance, and the ability for bike-share stations to be expanded or added to new locations.

Proposals are scheduled to be opened on Tuesday, May 4, at 10:00 a.m.
