One of the biggest retailers in the country is hard at work bringing a new outpost to Jersey City’s West Side as a planned Target inside a prominent shopping plaza should be going vertical in the coming weeks.
Jersey Digs broke the news about Jersey City’s Planning Board approving the new Target back in May 2023. The parcel slated to get the massive store is 381 Route 440, which spans about 424,000 square feet and is not far from the massive Bayfront redevelopment along the Hackensack River.
Much of the time since has been spent demolishing a former K-Mart at the property, which is now completed. Construction crews are currently putting in foundation at the parcel, which will re-connect to the rest of the larger Stadium Plaza complex when completed.
Drawn up by Bignell Watkins Hasser, Target’s plan calls for the new construction of a one-story building that will house their 119,387-square foot store alongside 515 proposed parking stalls and new signage. The plan for the property also includes 34 spaces for bicycles.
Target has an existing Jersey City store in Newport at 100 14th Street along the waterfront but has no current presence further inland. But that is about to change in a big way; the company announced in 2022 that they will be the anchor tenant on the ground floor of Kushner’s One Journal Square project.
As the future Target on Route 440 begins to rise, the race is officially on for which of the planned Jersey City stores will open first. An estimated timeline for either store has not been announced by the company.
