The surprising dearth of Greek cuisine in Jersey City should be addressed in the coming weeks as a new restaurant is slated to debut in refurbished space along a Downtown destination.
Construction work is well underway to bring an endeavor called Ela Greek Kitchen to a storefront along 179 Newark Avenue. The building, formerly home to a Sweetberry Bowls outpost and next door to Milk & Cream Cereal Bar, is situated along the under renovation Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza.
The upcoming eatery is owned by George Makrogiannis, who runs both Liberty Prime Steakhouse and Paulus Hook staple Buddy’s JC. Ela Greek Kitchen promises “ingredients straight from the motherland” and looks to offer traditional fare like souvlaki, gyros, horiatiki salad, spanakopita, olives and hummus dip, classic stuffed grape leaves, tzatziki, and more.
The restaurant has not released a full menu as of yet, but desserts including baklava and galaktoboureko look to be in the offering per the Greek-centric National Herald. Ela Greek Kitchen looks to provide both casual dine-in and takeout services, and they are tentatively scheduled to open later this month.
An Instagram account at the handle @ela_greekkitchen has teased a few of their dishes and can be followed for an official announcement as to when the restaurant will officially open its doors.
