All the major growth and density increases in and around Journal Square are finally starting to cause new restaurants and cafés to pop up, and the latest entry into the neighborhood is a local Indian-Pakistani eatery expanding to their second location.
Ujala Kabab has been operating at 3403 Kennedy Boulevard in The Heights for years and has now taken up residence at 713 Newark Avenue. Don’t let the temporary signage on the storefront turn you away, they are indeed open from 1 p.m. to 12 a.m. every day serving up what they dub “authentic and traditional food” inspired by India and Pakistan.
The casual restaurant sports a menu featuring classic Indian dishes like Tandoori Chicken Tikka and more Pakistani-type options like a Mixed Grill Shashlik of skewered meats. A small appetizer menu with chicken or veggie samosas, pakoras, and papads starts things off, while varieties of lassis and a dessert menu including ras malai and kheer, a rice pudding-type dish, round out the experience.
A big part of Ujala Kabab’s business revolves around their “party trays” that can feed anywhere from four to 20 people, depending on the size. The trays feature several types of biryanis including veggie, chicken, and goat, plus curry-style dishes.
The restaurant’s full menu can be viewed here and they are currently accepting delivery orders at 201-918-5203.
