Lidl’s expansion on our side of the Atlantic is continuing, with the European discount grocery store company following in its competitor Aldi’s footsteps by opening in the New Jersey suburbs. Now, Lidl is apparently moving into Bergen County, the state’s most populous county.
The chain has acquired 80 New Bridge Road in Bergenfield, according to a statement from Ripco Real Estate. The property, which sits on the Teaneck border, had been owned by Klingensmith Associates. Previously, it contained locations of Acme and Pathmark.
Although the opening of Lidl will certainly fill a void in the neighborhood, where the closest chain supermarkets are the Stop & Shop in Dumont and the ShopRite in Englewood, it will likely be significantly smaller than its predecessors. The existing building at the site takes up 54,650 square feet, while most Lidl stores are less than half that size.
The statement did not specify how much Lidl paid for the property, but the amount will likely be available in public records in the coming weeks.
This would be the northernmost location in the United States for the Neckarsulm, Germany-based chain of small grocery stores. The company, which has its American offices in northern Virginia, currently operates a location in Vineland along with stores in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas.
Although plans for some new locations on the East Coast have been halted or canceled, Lidl markets are still in the works for Staten Island, Cedar Knolls, Hazlet, Lawrence, Union, and Eatontown. The company also owns property in Mantua and Upper Deerfield.
