Despite recent questions over its financial viability in the long term, Manhattan-based WeWork has continued to expand its presence both in the United States and internationally.
The coworking chain not only offers office space in cities such as New York and Washington but can also now be found in smaller metropolitan areas like Raleigh and Salt Lake City. However, WeWork has notably remained absent from the Garden State.
Although plans to open a location in Jersey City’s Journal Square surfaced a few years ago, even though a former WeWork representative was quoted as stating that the city is “not cool” and lacks “vibe,” “life,” and “vibrancy,” the company eventually backed out of the proposal.
A WeWork spokesperson later told Jersey Digs that the company had “no plans in New Jersey” as of early 2018.
Now, could WeWork once again be considering a location in Jersey City? A source told Jersey Digs that a space could be coming to 2 Harborside Place.
The company has reportedly been in touch with contractors for the address in question, which is located within Mack-Cali’s rapidly changing Harborside complex and has been used alongside other addresses for the same property over the years.
Jersey Digs reached out to both WeWork and Mack-Cali for confirmation regarding the possible new coworking space. However, a WeWork spokesperson said that the company will “politely decline comment.”
Meanwhile, a Mack-Cali representative first asked how Jersey Digs learned this information before stating that they “cannot confirm this and [that] there is no further information.” The Exchange Place Alliance, which is based at Harborside, has not yet returned our request for comment.
Amid the coworking trend and the lack of WeWork locations in the Garden State aside from an operations center in Edison, smaller coworking businesses have popped up. For instance, Indiegrove operates in Jersey City, 3rd Space recently opened in Newark, and En Masse Coworking can be found in Morristown.
Jersey Digs will continue to follow this story and bring you updates should they become available.
