According to a listing posted earlier this month on LoopNet by Metro Commercial Real Estate, a Wawa convenience store and gas station is proposed for 1 Garfield Avenue in Jersey City, along the Bayonne border. The listing also states that a fast food restaurant that could feature a drive-thru window may occupy the remaining part of the lot, though the property is still available. Parking would be provided for customers of both the Wawa and the restaurant.
The site, located between the Route 78 overpass and West 55th Street, currently contains the Hudson Bayonne Lanes bowling alley, which would have to be demolished to make way for the new development.
Wawa, which is based in suburban Pennsylvania, has been expanding into Northern New Jersey in recent years. There is one other Hudson County location in Kearny, as well as nearby locations in Elizabeth, Garfield, and Maplewood.
A Wawa spokesperson did not return requests for comment and confirmation.
Wawa is not the only new convenience store and gas station coming to the area. A QuickChek location is under construction at the corner of East 22nd Street and Route 440 in Bayonne.
