According to a listing posted earlier this month on LoopNet by Metro Commercial Real Estate, a Wawa convenience store and gas station is proposed for 1 Garfield Avenue in Jersey City, along the Bayonne border. The listing also states that a fast food restaurant that could feature a drive-thru window may occupy the remaining part of the lot, though the property is still available. Parking would be provided for customers of both the Wawa and the restaurant.

The site, located between the Route 78 overpass and West 55th Street, currently contains the Hudson Bayonne Lanes bowling alley, which would have to be demolished to make way for the new development.

Wawa, which is based in suburban Pennsylvania, has been expanding into Northern New Jersey in recent years. There is one other Hudson County location in Kearny, as well as nearby locations in Elizabeth, Garfield, and Maplewood.

A Wawa spokesperson did not return requests for comment and confirmation.

Wawa is not the only new convenience store and gas station coming to the area. A QuickChek location is under construction at the corner of East 22nd Street and Route 440 in Bayonne.

    • Agreed. Wawa has better rolls and deli meat than Quick check. Not to mention Wawa pretzels are amazing. Love that this Philly girl turned Bayonner might get a local Wawa.

  1. This would be a great location for a WaWa store. A smart investment for a developer.
I live in the area and would frequently visit/shop daily at the Wawa at 1 Garfield Avenue, Bayonne. Also, hoping that a Whole foods store will move to Bayonne as I would do my shopping there twice a week, every week. I bought a home here in Bayonne a little over 5 years ago and couldn’t be happier with the move here.

  2. Do not close or tear down the Bowling Center. New Jersey already has a small amount of Bowling Centers as it is right now. That Bowling Center is the host of the North Jersey Central Bowling Regionals for the Special Olympics of NJ.
