Commuters and shoppers visiting the Newport Centre Mall have a new healthy meal option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner now that The Little Beet opened on the second floor on July 5.

The New York-based chain serves up gluten-free “plant based” dishes, from chef-made bowls to make-your-own salads to breakfast sandwiches. Most of the menu items are vegan as well.

Fresh ingredients include organic quinoa, brown rice, sweet potatoes, charred broccoli in olive oil, shaved brussels sprouts, seared salmon, braised pork, sesame avocado, beet falafel, roasted chicken, tofu, BBQ jackfruit, beets, lentils, beans, seeds, and a host of dips and spreads, including beet hummus and avocado bean dip.

The 2,340 square foot store will be located next to Dunkin Donuts.

The Little Beet was founded in 2014 and has grown to ten restaurants including the Jersey City location, which is the first in New Jersey. It’s also located in Manhattan, Westchester, Long Island, Washington, D.C., Arlington, and Miami.

The restaurant also offers catering. It will be open from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday serving all three meals, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends for lunch and dinner only.

The mall also offers dining options including Melt Shop, Obox Sushi, Poke n’ Ramen, Zinburger, Pret a Manger, and The Cheesecake Factory.

Newport Centre is located near the city’s waterfront, across the river from lower Manhattan. It’s anchored by Macy’s, JCPenney, Kohl’s, and Sears and offers more than 130 stores in total.
