The ownership behind a staple of Jersey City’s food scene has created a new upscale sushi counter called Nigiri with an omakase-heavy menu in cozy space that overlooks the Downtown skyline.
Nigiri, a new concept from the owners of Honshu, is officially soft opened at 95 Greene Street. The space is an addition to the existing Honshu concept that occupies their former patio, but is now equipped for year-round dining after being enclosed and finished.
Nigiri offers diners an omakase and handroll bar experience, sometimes known as “chef’s choice.” Depending on ingredients, the whims of the chef, and a diner’s preferences, the omakase-style service can differ from week to week.
Nigiri also offers four, five, and six course dining options or “a la carte” rolls. Their sushi concoctions feature everything from salmon and tuna to sea urchin or sweet shrimp, with the chef utilizing a variety of techniques from smokers and more to bring out big flavors.
Appetizers at the restaurant include honey shishito peppers or truffle edamame and Nigiri has a full bar service similar to Honshu featuring cocktails, wine, beer, sake, and Asian whiskey varieties. Desserts including matcha crème brulee round out the menu.
Nigiri by Honshu is now open to the public and taking reservations for lunchtime hours. Their evening service is still reserved for those with invitations throughout this week, but walk-in customers are welcome if there are extra tables available.
Nigiri’s space is connected to Honshu, which has been in business since 2005. The official grand opening of Nigiri by Honshu will take place on October 10 to coincide with the restaurant’s original opening anniversary.
