A classic board game with strong New Jersey connections is being revamped for a special Jersey City edition as a new version of Monopoly will hit stores by the end of 2024.
Top Trumps recently announced they will be creating a Jersey City edition of Monopoly under a license agreement with original publisher Hasbro. The company is seeking established Jersey City businesses that will be memorialized in the game and those interested can send public submissions to [email protected] for consideration.
The Jersey City version of the game will feature customized Community Chest and Chance playing cards plus tailored Monopoly money. Top Trumps offers dozens of special editions for cities including Portland, Pittsburgh, Tampa, the Hamptons, Manhattan, and Palm Springs.
The original Monopoly is famously based off of the streets of Atlantic City. The board game exploded in popularity during the 1930s when Parker Brothers began distributing the brand, which is based off an earlier game called The Landlord’s Game.
The Jersey City version of Monopoly is slated to be released later this year. This isn’t the first time the board game has made an impact in Jersey City, as a 2016 mural that adorned the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza generated a large amount of local attention.
The art was eventually painted over due to some depictions that generated various controversies, a move that itself proved controversial. The National Coalition Against Censorship penned a letter of protest over the decision, which drew a significant backlash over speech suppression issues.
