A New Orleans-inspired sub shop from across the Hudson River will be the latest restaurant to launch in Bergen-Lafayette as Cheeky Sandwiches is hoping to make their Jersey City debut later this year.
The Hazel, a relatively new development at 89 Monitor Street, has officially signed on Cheeky Sandwiches to take up space on their ground floor. The upcoming restaurant was confirmed by Alpine Residential and Fields Grade and will be coming to a neighborhood that has seen a slew of development in recent years.
Cheeky Sandwiches had operated out of a storefront on Orchard Street in Manhattan for many years but that location is now closed and they are set to open in New York City’s Essex Market. The Jersey City outpost will be their second location when it is up and running.
The restaurant had a decidedly hole-in-the-wall vibe with limited seating during their run but a well-received menu. The offerings included a short rib sandwich or a 1/2 shrimp 1/2 oyster po’boy dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickles, lemon juice, mayo, and ketchup.
A review from NY Mag of the initial Orchard Street location noted that Cheeky Sandwiches owner Din Yates had the bread shipped up north from the John Gendusa Bakery in New Orleans, adding to the authenticity of the endeavor.
Cheeky Sandwiches hasn’t announced an official opening timeline for the Jersey City outpost but can be followed on Instagram at the handle @cheeky_sandwiches.
The restaurant is the latest eatery slated to call the area near the Liberty State Light Rail Station home, as The Roxy recently opened nearby and MochiDough is coming soon.
