Over the last century, generations of Jersey City residents needing car repair services went to Joseph Cabala Auto Body, a business located near P.S. 6. However, after serving the community since 1919, the auto body shop’s days in operation at 70 Central Avenue have come to an end. Now, plans to construct a new development at the site are moving forward.
Legacy Development Group, a company based in Union City, is planning to bring a project known as 70 Central Lofts to the premises. The approved five-story complex is expected to include 31 apartments and one retail space.
Abigail Katznelson of Legacy Development Group told Jersey Digs that “affordable housing” will not be included in this development and noted that the building was initially designed as a condominium project. There will be a mixture of two-bedroom and three-bedroom units along with a fitness center for residents.
Jersey Digs first reported that there were plans for a 31-unit development at the site back in January 2019. Property records show that last August, a company associated with Legacy Development Group called 70 Central Lofts, LLC paid $2.325 million for the tract at 70 Central Avenue.
Although the spread of the novel coronavirus has caused uncertainty over when some local development projects will be completed, Katznelson stated that her company is hoping to begin construction early this summer in preparation for completion late next year.
