After years of being a relative afterthought on the development front, Jersey City’s West Side neighborhood will be getting some brand-new housing options courtesy of Fields Construction Company.
A five-story, 63-unit rental apartment building at 16 Bennett Street gained approvals in June of 2016 and was granted a 20-year tax abatement by the City Council earlier this year. Fields is serving as general contractor for the development, which just broke ground and includes a mix of 57 market-rate units and six apartments reserved for moderate-income residents.
The project, which will also include 57 parking spaces, is being developed by 16 Bennett Street Urban Renewal LLC, with Bronx-based Casa Blanca Management serving as construction manager. The building, designed by Minervini Vandermark, will feature 3,286 square feet of courtyard space and a 2,178-square-foot roof deck.
“This is a great example of the type of project that we seek out,” Fields Construction Principal Jim Caulfield said in a statement announcing the groundbreaking. “It will bring high-quality housing to Jersey City’s West Side, and is creating jobs for a significant number of Jersey City residents.”
The project, across from the Hudson Mall, is being built near NJCU’s expansion and a few other developments are starting to sprout in the area after years of planning. 16 Bennett is estimated to wrap construction up by Winter of next year.
