Commuters who use New Jersey’s busiest transit hub will soon have another option for coffee.
Starbucks Coffee will be opening a location at Newark Penn Station in the near future. During its meeting on August 8, the New Jersey Transit Board of Directors voted to enter into a decade-long lease with the company for a 1,050-square-foot space on the main level. Starbucks will pay nearly $1.7 million to the statewide transportation agency over the next 10 years and will spend $750,000 to improve the space, which is located near the Ferry Street entrance just east of Track 1.
A resolution approving the deal states that “this lease will provide non-farebox revenue to NJ Transit and will also bring a nationally recognized brand to Newark Penn Station for the benefit of NJ Transit customers.”
There was previously a Starbucks located within the Gateway Center, an office complex that is connected to Penn Station by sky bridges. Currently, the Seattle-based chain’s only locations in New Jersey’s largest city are at Newark Liberty International Airport, Rutgers University-Newark, and Prudential’s Shoppes on Broad.
This is not the first New Jersey train station where Starbucks has opened. Last year, a Starbucks opened at the Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City while another has been operating on the Sloan Street side of the South Orange Train Station for two decades.
