A stately home steeped in history that overlooks the Delaware River has been listed for sale for the first time in over 40 years as a property known as Towerview is hoping to find a buyer.
Situated in Edgewater Park at 445 Cottage Avenue, the majestic home was first built in 1750 as a modest one-room farmhouse. The house was slowly expanded over the years and now spans three stories and includes seven bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms.
The home has a slew of notable owners including Elias Boudinot, who called the property home during the early 1800s. Boudinot served for one year as president of the Continental Congress from 1783 to 1784 and later served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before being appointed by President George Washington as director of the U.S. Mint.
Towerview is currently owned by former Philadelphia TV anchor and New Jersey legislator Diane Allen, who purchased the property in 1982 for $225,000. An in-ground pool, tennis court, and pier along the Delaware River have been added to the grounds in that time, which feature lush landscaping throughout the 3.15-acre lot.
The home is likely the oldest house in Edgewater Park, which is situated along the Delaware River, about halfway between Trenton and Camden. The property boasts 230 feet of riverfrontage and includes riparian rights along the Delaware.
The inside of the home matches the majestic of the exterior, as four fireplaces and scattered through the house. The beautifully updated kitchen features a tin ceiling, and many architectural details are thoughtfully repeated throughout the home.
The home features an elevator and a striking four-story tower portion that dates to the 1800s. The third floor of the home, which was added in 1898, boasts a grand staircase and a stained-glass Palladium window that embraces a Victorian Neo-Colonial exterior.
The original farmhouse first built on the property has become the servants’ quarters, while a detached garage with two spaces was also added. Taxes at the property run $24,722/year.
Towerview is currently co-listed for $1.75 million by Naoji Moriuchi and Lauren Soss with Compass New Jersey’s Moorestown office.
