A unique feature could be coming to the top of a new building along the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall in Downtown Jersey City.
A public notice released last month by the Jersey City Board of Alcoholic Beverage Control mentioned that an application was recently filed in regards to Leafrak, LLC’s retail consumption and distribution liquor license for 143 Newark Avenue and 126 Christopher Columbus Drive in Ward E.
The proposal calls for having the liquor license cover the “7th floor restaurant, rooftop and patio” on the premises.
The property, owned by First Street-based C & E Developers of JC, LLC, is the site of an upcoming mixed-use development that has been under construction for close to two years.
The new development, which is being branded as “The Sophia,” will include 17 one-bedroom apartments. Previously, the premises contained a four-story building that was supposed to become home to Hard Grove Cafe and new apartments, but the structure was torn down after being significantly damaged in 2014.
Leafrak, LLC was registered out of Jersey City two years ago. Few other details are known about the company or the proposed rooftop restaurant.
Should this project move forward, it would be the latest of several rooftop restaurants in the vicinity.
In addition to the Rooftop at Exchange Place, which opened last year atop Jersey City’s relatively new Hyatt House location, Porta, The Ashford, and Skinner’s Loft include rooftop decks.
