When you support an NJ Christmas tree farm, you aren’t just getting a beautiful tree to decorate for the holidays. You’re taking an active role in preserving local business — and improving New Jersey’s environment in the process.
Christmas tree farms in New Jersey grow over 5,000 acres of trees each year. These trees prevent soil erosion, protect our water supply, and absorb carbon dioxide while emitting fresh oxygen into the air around us.
And when they’re done protecting our planet, these Christmas trees become beautiful celebrations of holiday joy within your homes!

What to Know Before You Visit a Christmas Tree Farm
Get your checklist in order before you go shopping for a live Christmas tree at your local farm! Here are 7 tips to find the best trees:
- Start early! Whatever day feels right to get your Christmas tree — go a few days earlier than that! There are plenty of trees to go around, but if you want your choice of the best, get there ahead of the rush.
- The season starts on Thanksgiving. Many NJ families shop for their live Christmas trees on Thanksgiving and Black Friday.
- Know your NJ Christmas tree types. The most popular species of live Christmas trees in New Jersey include Douglas fir, Blue spruce, Balsam fir and Canaan fir.
- There isn’t a “best type of tree”. If your heart is set on a Douglas fir, don’t despair if you can’t find a great one. There are over 20 types of Christmas trees and each is beautiful in its own way.
- Choose a tree with a great leader. A leader is the top growing branch of your tree. Choose one that’s at least 4-6 inches long for your star, angel, or other “tree topper” decorations.
- Avoid trees with bare spots. Bare spots and missing branches are warning signs that your Christmas tree may already be drying out. Look for full trees with plenty of needles so your tree doesn’t die off before the holidays.
- Water your live tree consistently. Once your Christmas tree is cut and placed in its stand, fill the stand with water every day. This keeps your tree fresh and alive longer, and helps avoid a potential fire hazard.
What is a Cut-Your-Own Christmas Tree Farm?
Cut-your-own Christmas tree farms are a hands-on, interactive way for families to select their tree for the holidays. You will cut your own trees on these farms — sometimes on your own, and sometimes with the help of a farm employee.
If you’re worried about cutting your own Christmas tree down, don’t worry. Many of these farms offer pre-cut trees as well.

What to Bring to a New Jersey Christmas Farm
Make sure you dress as warmly as possible when visiting a New Jersey Christmas tree farm. You’ll be out and about for a few hours, and the temperature may drop as the day goes on.
Wear a heavy sweater and a sturdy jacket, a warm hat, gloves and boots. Add a layer of long johns or leggings under your pants. Pack an extra layer or two for the kids in the trunk.
If you’re visiting a true cut-your-own farm, bring a cordless chainsaw. Axes are okay but require much more time to chop down your desired tree. Some farms don’t allow chainsaws — check individual requirements ahead of time.
Make sure you bring enough ropes, cables and chains to fully secure your tree to your car or truck.
Finally, have a thermos full of coffee, hot cocoa or hot tea ready for everyone in your car to enjoy on the ride home!
Whichever NJ farm you choose, make sure to bring plenty of holiday cheer with you!
