An ice cream shop that has called Downtown Jersey City home for decades is planning to expand to the city’s Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood.
Torico Ice Cream is seeking to open a location in what is currently a one-story industrial structure at 1041 Garfield Avenue between Berry Lane Park and The Junction.
Christine Berrios of Torico Ice Cream told Jersey Digs that the Bergen-Lafayette outpost is expected to be an ice cream production facility that would include a retail store.
Documents released by Jersey City’s municipal government show that an application for variances in connection with these plans was filed with the Zoning Board of Adjustment by 1041 Bela, LLC, though it is not yet clear what date this proposal is scheduled to go before the board.
The application states that there would be 3,675 square feet of industrial space and 310 square feet of retail space.
Torico Ice Cream’s existing parlor at the corner of Erie and 1st streets will continue to stay open, according to Berrios. The Garfield Avenue location is slated to open in 2022.
