A breakfast and lunch spot that previously operated in Hoboken has made the journey up the palisades to their new location in The Heights.

Gold Roast Café opened a few years ago inside a new building in western Hoboken at 600 Harrison Street. The business ended up shuttering last year but has gotten a second life at 434 Central Avenue, opening their shop on September 16.

The name ‘Gold Roast’ might seem like it’s a play on Jersey City’s position along New Jersey’s Gold Coast, but it’s actually a tribute to Australia’s famous Gold Coast beach in Queensland. The owners of the café spent many weekends along those shores before coming to America and starting their business.

The café’s menu is centered around typical fresh seasonal food from down under that includes a Brekky Sandwich or an Aussie-style grilled cheese with caramelized onions. Specialty espresso coffees like lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites and cortados are served, and there are a few Aussie mixes like açai bowls, fresh juices, milkshakes and smoothies.

Gold Roast has already set up an online system where customers can place an order for pick-up or delivery directly from the café. Their storefront, located between South and Congress Streets, features some outdoor seating in a rear patio for those looking to stay and relax. Their Instagram handle from their Hoboken days, @goldroastcafe, should have some new posts coming soon.

The café opens bright and early at 7 a.m. inside the former Griot Café space at the building. The news of Gold Roast’s arrival appears to put a damper on redevelopment plans that were approved for the property earlier this year that seek to build 32 residential units and 2,437 square feet of retail space.
