The Jersey City Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) recently heard a proposal for 238 First Street aka 26 Erie Street. According to the HPC agenda, applicant Danielle De Lopez, owner of Burger Eatery, is looking to merge their existing space with the retail space next door, as well as adding a sidewalk café on Erie Street. In total, the café would have a combined total of 20 seats including the sidewalk seating. It would be classified as a category two restaurant.

The property in question was originally built as a one-family rowhouse around 1865. In the late 1800s, it was converted to mixed use with retail and service shop spaces on the ground floor. The neighboring space is currently occupied by Ruthie’s Cutting Edge Salon.

With only a few seats inside, the Burger Eatery always seemed too small of a space for a burger spot. With this new proposal, the restaurant will hopefully get the space it needs.

The HPC recommended the case to the Planning Board who will now hear the proposal.
