Parks – we walk past them, through them and around them almost every day of our lives. But while we’re rushing to work, on our way to the gym, or walking our dogs, how often do we really stop and appreciate the beauty of our surroundings? Whether it’s the old world charm of Van Vorst Park or the majestic New York City skyline seen from Liberty State Park, Jersey City boasts access to a bevy of truly stunning recreational areas. That said, with state-of-the-facilities, lush plantings, and a one-of-a-kind tranquil vibrancy, Hamilton Park stands out as one of, if not the most impressive park in Southern Hudson County.

Hamilton Park plays a key role in the surrounding neighborhood and assists in fostering communal spirit by acting as a gathering place for its residents. In the warmer months, those looking to break a sweat can be seen playing basketball and tennis on the recently renovated courts. Not only does the park boast modernized facilities, it offers lush greenery, great for playing Frisbee as well as integrated footpaths, perfect for running laps around the area. Families, young and old, visit the park to enjoy the expansive playground or to catch up with fellow dog-owners in the gated dog section. Others visit the park to escape the bustling city life and enjoy a moment’s peace underneath the shady trees.

Aside from the common uses of a traditional park, Hamilton Park hosts several unique events and competitions throughout the year. For 15 seasons, Hamilton Park has hosted the Hamilton Park Summer League, a widely popular basketball competition that serves over 500 participants each year. Movies in the Park, an initiative spearheaded by the Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association, always attracts a large crowd to enjoy exciting flicks underneath the Victorian-styled gazebo in the center of the park. If you haven’t had the chance to experience Movies in the Park, don’t miss “The Jungle Book” on September 22nd and “The Nightmare before Christmas” on October 13th. For all your cooking needs, the park also hosts a farmer’s market every Wednesday afternoon where you can purchase locally-sourced produce and an assortment of delicious baked goods.

Jameel Mohammed, Associate Director & Senior Acquisitions Manager at Dixon Leasing, remarks on the benefits of living nearby Hamilton Park, “It offers everything you could ever want from a neighborhood park right outside your doorstep. The park is just so lively and brings so much energy to the area. When I show potential tenants properties near the park, I can see them picturing their future together. In a way, the park makes my job a little easier,” he laughs. “The community is warm and friendly, the facilities are A-grade; I don’t understand who wouldn’t want to live here – just ask Erik and Ricky.”

Despite all the fun activities and social offerings, Hamilton Park is not just a gathering place. Our parks play an important environmental role. They create an ecosystem for local animals, provide drainage and soil seepage from stormwater, and help to control temperatures through natural cooling properties. In addition, parks provide an added layer of safety through the concept of “eyes on the street,” which suggests that people feel safer in public places as the informal surveillance of crowds reduces the likelihood of crime.
