A major retail stretch just of Downtown Newark is officially home to a new eatery as an experienced restaurant group has launched Sugo inside the Springfield Avenue Marketplace.
Sugo, which specializes in pizza and Italian food, recently opened inside a storefront at 48 Jones Street. The restaurant occupies 2,100 square feet at the grocery-anchored neighborhood shopping center that is managed by Levin Management Corporation (LMC).
LMC Senior Leasing Representative E.J. Moawad negotiated the lease on behalf of the retail center’s ownership, while Tania Pesante of Real Broker LLC represented the tenant. The operator of Sugo is an experienced restaurateur who also owns Assaggini Di Roma, a popular Italian restaurant in Hazlet.
“Shoppers and local residents alike have previously appreciated the presence of a pizzeria at this location,” said Moawad in a statement. “Springfield Avenue Marketplace, which is part of a mixed-use community with 152 apartments, has drawn several new dining tenants in the past few years. Sugo rounds out the property’s restaurant choices nicely.”
The menu at Sugo includes appetizers like stuffed mushrooms and artichoke hearts alongside pasta dishes like baked ziti, penne pomodora, and tortellini alfredo. Pizzas, salads, and other Italian fare are found at the restaurant, which also offers catering service to the community.
Sugo joins other dining options inside the Springfield Avenue Marketplace that include Snap Back by Hook & Reel, Taco Bell, McDonald’s and Sarku Japan. Other retailers that call the complex home include a 67,000-square-foot ShopRite, Snipes, Ashley Stewart, T-Mobile and H&R Block.
The hours at Sugo include both lunch and dinner service and span Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., with Sunday service from noon until 5 p.m. The restaurant can be followed on Instagram at the handle @sugo_italiano.
