New York City pastrami and corned beef institution Katz’s Delicatessen has been satisfying fressers’ cravings for 129 years at its original 300-seat Lower East Side restaurant. Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Katz’s is going global, and building a 30,000 sq. ft. distribution center in Hackensack to service its international customers.
That’s on top of their existing domestic mail-order business, which was born during World War II with the slogan “Send salami to your boy in the Army,” and built in the 1990s. Today, they ship 10,000 to 12,000 orders annually.
Katz’s has been featured repeatedly on the Food Network and Travel Channel, but it’s probably best known for the infamous “I’ll have what she’s having” scene in When Harry Met Sally.
Shipping to Canada and Mexico is expected to begin this year, with service to other countries commencing sometime in 2018.
