Throughout Jersey City, new hotels are rising. From an 87-room project along Route 78/14th Street just outside of the Holland Tunnel, the Holiday Inn Express coming to Tonnelle Avenue to the Hyatt House at Exchange Place and the Canopy by Hilton just proposed for Morgan Street, the city is becoming a major hotel market in the New York Metropolitan Area.
Now, a new hotel is being proposed for the Journal Square Redevelopment 2060 Zone. City records show that the new building could come to 823 Newark Avenue, between Tonnelle Avenue and Herbert Place, in the India Square neighborhood of the rapidly growing Ward C. The proposal calls for the hotel to be four stories tall, and for it to contain 21 rooms. In addition, a 1,839 square foot restaurant is also included in the plans.
Currently, the property, surrounded by storefronts, contains a two-story house that has been boarded up and vacant for several years, covered with boarded up windows, graffiti, and signs advising people to refrain from entering. Previously, it was occupied by MD Realty, MD Book and Accountant Services, and Lotus Travel and Tours. NJ Parcels records show that the structure was acquired at the end of 2015 for $1.2 million by VRAJ Realty, LLC of Paramus, Bergen County.
The developer, Viral S. Patel, recently applied for Preliminary and Final Site Plan Approval. The proposal was heard by the Jersey City Planning Board on March 28th and April 11th.
