As housing costs continue to climb and finding a place increasingly difficult, Hudson County’s largest city has begun rolling out an easier way for residents to snag an affordable housing unit.
Jersey City’s brand-new affordable housing portal has officially gone live at https://affordablehousingjc.com. The online system hopes to provide “one stop shopping” for folks looking to find an affordable unit, apply for lotteries, and keep informed about new opportunities to obtain housing.
“We are adding affordable housing opportunities at historic rates throughout Jersey City, and this portal is the next step in enhancing housing equity and accessibility,” Mayor Fulop said in a statement announcing the move. “This portal is part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live in safe, secure and affordable homes.”
Those interested can create a profile through the portal, which will allow residents to apply for multiple properties at once, track and edit their applications, and receive updates. It additionally allows users to communicate directly with property managers and staff of Jersey City’s Department of Affordable Housing.
The portal allows users to search for affordable units by location, unit type, and affordability level. Workforce units are included in the portal, which also features a comprehensive affordable housing map listing every unit in the city that includes projects that are either approved or under construction.
There are currently two properties that are taking applications through the portal. One is located at 125 Lake Street and another inside 475 Communipaw Avenue. Lotteries for both properties are slated to take place later this month.
The creation of the new affordable housing portal comes less than three yew years after Jersey City passed a long-sought Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance that has started to create additional affordable housing units in new developments.
