In what is turning out to be a closer race than originally predicted, Senator Menendez is calling in the big guns. The formerly federally indicted Senator is in the final stretch of his reelection campaign and his Republican challenger, Bob Hugin, the former CEO of Celgene, is putting up quite the fight.
Last year, a hung jury resulted in Menendez narrowly escaping a conviction for charges of bribery, fraud, and making false statements stemming from his dealings with Florida ophthalmologist and personal ‘friend’ Salomon Melgen. Who, it’s worth mentioning, wasn’t as lucky and received a 17-year sentence for stealing $73 million from Medicare by persuading elderly patients to undergo excruciating tests and treatments they didn’t need for diseases they didn’t have.
In a political climate where it’s nearly suicidal to be aligned at all with the GOP, especially in a deep blue state like New Jersey, a race that should be an easy win is tighter than expected for Menendez. Since Federal prosecutors opted against retrying the Senator, it’s now the voters’ turn to weigh in on the charges.

Menendez, who is deeply entrenched in the establishment Democratic machine recently rallied “a series of campaign leadership councils” of “more than 100 party leaders and activists” including Democrats “who don’t like each other but have united behind Menendez’s re-election campaign.”
To top it off tonight, Menendez is bringing, Hillary Clinton, the Queen Bee herself, to Jersey City for a fundraising event.
The event tonight is organized by Women for Menendez. The group is apparently unfazed by the accusations of Menendez securing visas for Melgen’s ‘girlfriends’. It takes place at Liberty Prime Steakhouse starting at 6 p.m. As of this morning tickets are still available starting at $500 for the “Friend” level and topping out at $5,400 for ‘Chair’ status.
