In another sign that the Jersey City school craze is in full effect, BelovED Community Charter School has announced the purchase of a buildable lot at 535 Grand Street. More specifically, a non-profit called Friends of the BelovED Charter School will secure a mortgage and construction financing through New Jersey Community Capital to develop the property into a 40,000 square foot middle school.
Plans call for a new four-story facility designed by Urbahn Architects. Once completed, the new building will accommodate 240 students in grades six to nine. Housed in the new building will be 15 classrooms, four half classrooms, two science rooms, two art rooms, a music room, a cafetorium with warming kitchen, a gymnasium, a media center/library, administrative offices and a large sub-dividable multipurpose room. Outdoors, there’s a recreation space and a parking lot for 31 vehicles.
Currently, BelovED accommodates students in grades K-6. This new facility will allow them to increase their enrollments up to grade 9. The new building is located just up Grand Street from their current location at 508 Grand Street.
