The proliferation of new restaurants in the Mile Square City’s uptown neighborhoods is getting another entry as a Chinese eatery is currently under construction along Hoboken’s main street.
Passersby might have noticed some rumblings at 1014 Washington Street over the last few months, albeit with a few stops and starts. The retail space on the ground floor, formerly home to a bodega market, was gutted over the summer, but construction abruptly halted at the property due to a Stop Work order.
Issues at the property have since been worked out and Jersey Digs has learned a company called Golden Rice Shop Inc. will be taking over the storefront. A full proper kitchen will be constructed as part of the overhaul, which was designed by Wharton-based architect Todd L. Koenig.
Golden Rice Shop’s restaurant area will clock in at 712 square feet and provide seating for 37 diners. The eatery has been in the works for some time; the company was granted a conditional use variance from the city’s planning board in February last year.
Little else is known about Golden Rice Shop so far, but the owner of the business is a New York man named Hu Piao Yue. He applied for the restaurant’s permits out of an apartment in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and it appears Golden Rice Shop will be his first culinary endeavor.
New restaurants have been popping up with noticeable frequency throughout uptown Hoboken over the last six months. Jersey Digs was the first to report details about a new bistro from the owners of Sorellina that’s coming to the former home of Maxwell’s at 11th and Washington streets, a storefront that’s been vacant for almost two years.
Grand Vin’s Mike Gallucci shared details with us in October about his upcoming dining and cocktails experience called Olivia’s at 11th and Garden streets, while a new gelato and espresso bar called KikiLu Gelato is coming to 900 Garden Street. It’s unclear when Golden Rice Shop will be adding to the future food landscape, but residents of uptown Hoboken have a whole bunch of new eateries to look forward to over the coming year.
