Hoboken has officially joined the recreational dispensary party as a previously medicinal facility called The Station has begun recreational sales.

Hoboken’s first medical cannabis dispensary officially opened last year at 86 River Street inside a former bank space. The endeavor is a partnership between Colorado-based Terrapin Care and Joseph Castelo, who was an indie filmmaker before turning into one of Hoboken’s most successful business owners.

Castelo owns the hot spot Antique Bar & Bakery along with Antique Loft, and Sweven, a members-only co-working space.

Jersey Digs initially reported on Castelo’s dispensary in 2021 following approval by Hoboken’s planning board. The company worked with Hoboken-based MVMK Architects to revamp the 3,500-square-foot space, which now includes murals from local artist Wendell McShine.

Recreational sales at The Station started on February 5, making it the first facility in Hoboken to offer recreational cannabis. Customers can order cannabis products via a “mellowton” digital menu as kiosks in the building.

Another facility called Story Dispensary is slated to open uptown following a legal settlement, but The Station is currently the only cannabis dispensary in Hoboken.

Terrapin, who became one of the country’s first licensed medical marijuana providers in 2009, has aligned with several groups as part of an effort to give back to the local community with The Station. They include Jersey City-based WomenRising, Hudson Pride Center, and Project Help, an organization dedicated to serving homeless veterans.

The Station can be followed on Instagram at the handle @terrapinhoboken.
