NOWmed Walk-In Urgent Care is now open seven days a week, 365 days a year, specializing in immediate care for acute illness and injury. Located at 555 West Side Avenue just south of Communipaw Avenue, NOWmed also provides screenings, diagnostic services, and non-emergency medical assistance plus no appointment is needed.

Established in 2018 by Jersey City native, Dr. Tyeese Gaines, NOWmed is bringing accessible and affordable healthcare to the West Side — a neighborhood lacking comprehensive urgent care facilities.

“Not everyone has access to a car or money for the bus to get to the hospital in critical situations. With NOWmed, it makes it so much easier for people of the West Side community to walk-in and get immediate care, whether they are insured or not,” said Dr. Gaines in a prepared statement. “Opening this facility was especially important to me, because growing up, we did not have this type of access.”

NOWmed also employs a staff of medical assistants, radiology technicians, and providers who are predominantly minority women, reflecting the diversity of Jersey City as well as Dr. Gaines’ commitment to diversity in the field. Also as a result, the multilingual staff can communicate with patients in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Vietnamese.

Dr. Gaines is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and completed her residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital where she was chief resident and a clinical instructor. Dr. Gaines previously served as Medical Director & Chairman of the Emergency Department at Landmark Medical Center in Rhode Island; Medical Director of UltraMed Urgent Care in Skokie, Illinois; and Assistant Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Raritan Bay Medical Center. She also holds a Master’s degree in Journalism and an M.B.A.

“It’s truly an honor to be back in my hometown and bringing my passion with me. This is something I’ve aspired to do since a young age and it’s exciting to finally see it happen,” said Dr. Gaines.
