One of the best hot dog spots in the Garden State that has been around for over 90 years is on the move, as Boulevard Drinks will be moving across the street in Jersey City to make way for a massive redevelopment.
Boulevard Drinks owner Victor Victoratos recently announced on Instagram that the last day of business on Kennedy Boulevard will be November 30. The casual hot dog and drink spot will be moving to about 500 square feet of space inside the Journal Square Transportation Center.
For those uninitiated, Boulevard Drinks serves hot dogs, cheese dogs, chili dogs, and just about any other type of dog or sausage around. Their drinks, which still run just $1.75 in times like these, span from their fruit punch to pina coladas and more.
The business will be occupying the storefront that had been home to the Journal Square Special Improvement District, which is situated next to the Starbucks on the street-level concourse. The new Boulevard Drinks concept hopes to open early in the new year.
The long-running staple of the neighborhood is moving thanks to massive redevelopment. Jersey City’s Planning Board approved an application earlier this year to redevelop 2859-2873 Kennedy Boulevard, which includes the Boulevard Drinks storefront.
Developer Nasser Freres has plans for a 55-story development that would rise to just over 588 feet and include 840 residential units, 84 of which are affordable. The future ground-floor retail space that is partially replacing Boulevard Drinks is slated to house a 48,000-square-foot Whole Foods, which will bring a proper supermarket to the Journal Square neighborhood.
While it will inevitably be sad to see Boulevard Drinks go, they will be joining several new businesses that have opened in the Journal Square Transportation Center’s street level over the last year. Their neighbors include relatively new arrivals like JJ Sports Bar and a Teriyaki One outpost, along with longer-term tenants like Jolibee, bubble tea spot Tsaocaa, and Taco Bell.
