A modern complex in University Heights has officially started work amidst the backdrop of Downtown Newark’s development party as revitalization in the Brick City is starting to hit a variety of neighborhoods.

Earlier this month, Tona Construction released some renderings of their long-planned project at 50 Sussex Avenue. Jersey Digs broke the news about the development almost two years ago, with the company gaining approvals for their proposal last year.

Tona Construction demolished several one and two-story buildings at 50-54 Sussex Avenue back in April to prepare for the development, which is designed by INOA Architecture. Set to rise 150 feet, the project will include 203 rental units plus 2,000 square feet of ground floor commercial space.

The 15-story high-rise aims to bring modern luxury design to the rental market in the University Heights area of Newark. Tona Construction says the building will consist of a variety of studio, one-, and two-bedroom units while also featuring parking, a full gym, a lounge, a theater room, and much more.

The glass-heavy development will sport almost floor-to-ceiling windows in most of the units, while renderings of a lobby showcase a bar, pool table, and fireplace alongside seating areas.

50 Sussex Avenue is across the street from the modern Baxter Park complex and just blocks away from NJIT, Rutgers, and Saint Michael’s Hospital. The area is serviced by both the Warren Street and Norfolk Street stops on the Newark Light Rail.

Tona Construction says that the 50 Sussex Avenue complex is expected to be completed during the early half of 2024.
