Many locals were a bit disappointed when Flatbread Grill closed their Jersey City outpost last year, but a new Mediterranean eatery just a few blocks away is stepping up to fill the falafel void and provides a few international twists on old favorites.
Just before Christmas, Falafel Station quietly opened along a busy stretch of road at 2828 John F. Kennedy Boulevard. The space, formerly home to a pawn shop, was completely gutted during its transformation into a modern restaurant, which features rustic wood, large windows, and signage with local cues that evoke trains.

Both high-top and traditional table seating are featured at Falafel Station, which has also started delivery service throughout the neighborhood. The star of the restaurant is obviously their falafel, which ranges from the traditional ground chickpea version to a stuffed variety with pine nuts and homemade harissa sauce to an egg falafel made up of boiled eggs and feta cheese.
Shawarma and kebab staples like chicken, lamb, beef, and kofta are all accounted for and Falafel Station has come up with a few unique ways to serve their proteins. Dishes at the restaurant can be served in the traditional Egyptian-style pita or in a “rocket style” on Italian hero bread. A tortilla style option uses Mexican cheeses and jalapenos while their “street fries” variety serves the cuisine in a manner similar to poutine by including fries, feta cheese, tomato, pickles, olives, and sauce.

Falafel Station also has a few signature plates of hummus, baba ghanouj, moussaka, and more plus some dessert options like baklava, Middle Eastern cookies called betefour, or a pudding dessert called muhalabia forno. Arabica coffees and other assorted drinks round out the menu at the restaurant, which is currently accepting job applications through their website.

Falafel Station is now open for dine-in and take out service from 10 a.m. through 9 p.m. daily and can be followed on Instagram at the handle @falafel_station.
