The Jersey City storefront that housed the beloved seafood restaurant Hooked will soon be bustling with activity once again as Samurai Sushi is hoping to launch its second location in the coming weeks.

The Japanese restaurant announced their imminent arrival in Jersey City last week on their Instagram account @samuraisushinj. They will be setting up shop at 467 Communipaw Avenue inside the ground floor where Hooked formerly operated.

The East Rutherford-based restaurant has garnered some stellar Yelp reviews since moving into their current digs on Paterson Avenue just about four years ago. The menu at Samurai Sushi is quite diverse but nonetheless is sushi-forward offering special rolls of raw and cooked varieties plus sushi and sashimi combos.

The restaurant also serves some ramen dishes like a tonkotsu option with chashu pork or miso varieties with seafood and veggie choices. Their appetizer menu might be the most eclectic portion, including dishes like a deep-fried tofu, steamed dumplings, negimaki, or “lava drops,” a battered creamy kani with spicy sauce.

The interior space of Samurai Sushi’s latest location has not yet been revealed, but their East Rutherford outpost boast both sushi counter-style seating and traditional dining setups. Hooked lacked a liquor license and it does not appear one has been transferred to the property, so it looks like Samurai Sushi will be a BYOB affair.

The restaurant is currently hiring in Jersey City, looking to fill sushi chefs, line cooks, and front-of-the-house positions. Samurai Sushi has stated on their social media accounts that they hope to open their Communipaw Avenue location later this month.
