A business that once started as a food truck roaming the streets of Jersey City has launched their newest location as Mordi’s Sandwich Shop has officially hit the burgeoning Journal Square neighborhood.

The popular lunch spot has taken over ground floor space at 132 Baldwin Avenue on that road’s corner with Academy Street. Mordi’s first opened as a brick-and-mortar space back in 2018 along Communipaw Avenue in the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood.

The restaurant had operated as a food truck over the prior four years, serving their Israeli street food in locations throughout Hudson County. The traveling culinary venture was initially launched by owner and chef Mordechai Chichportiche (or Mordi for short), who was born and raised in Israel.

Mordi graduated from The French Culinary Institute and later worked as a line cook in Tel Aviv and New York City, leaving his position as Sous Chef at Eataly’s Il Pesce to start the food truck.

The updated version of Mordi’s features the schnitzel, falafel, and pita selections that have won over locals plus some signature sandwiches like schnitzel parmigiana with house-made sauce and fresh mozzarella.

Burgers, platters, and house made condiments are also on the menu at Mordi’s, which additionally serves breakfast sandwiches served all day long on Challah bread buns. Sides like falafel, hummus, and cauliflower bites round out the menu.

Mordi’s in Journal Square is available for pick-up and delivery via Uber Eats and their soft opening hours for the new location span Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. The business can be followed on Instagram at the handle @mordissandwich.
