The preservation and meticulous re-imagining of the church is apparent throughout the careful conversion of the property. Developed by Vreeland Projects and designed by Devino Aiello and Associates (DA+A), Lafayette House is the latest chapter in the church’s rich legacy. The building’s impressive original pressed-brick and cut-brownstone façade, cornice, and wrought iron fencing welcome residents to their historic homes.

The church’s history was well-documented over the decades, with records celebrating its vibrant past and importance in the local community. In addition to various pastoral leaderships and roles in civil rights movements, the Lafayette Methodist Episcopal Church – predecessor Methodist parish to St. John’s A.M.E. – was the first Hudson County institution to establish a competitive basketball league, with the Lafayette King’s Sons team formed in 1897. The building also had notable refurbishments throughout the years, including the commissioning of a “Christ the Good Shepherd” memorial stained-glass window following the nearby infamous 1916 munitions explosion incident.

Upon entering the building, residents are greeted by original bricks, a traditional floor in the lobby, and a Gothic window form. The redesign of the property incorporates elements that pay tribute to the past, with the residences embracing a classic monochromatic color palette that offers homage to Lafayette House’s heritage. The historical aspects of the building are further acknowledged by soaring ceilings with track lighting, imported leaded glass windows, and 7” wood flooring.
