The Jersey City waterfront has imported another Manhattan-based eatery as the French-inspired café Maman has started serving customers near the Exchange Place PATH station.
Last fall, Maman announced they were opening inside the ground floor of 70 Hudson Street. The bakery and breakfast-heavy business debuted in 2014 when the husband-and-wife team of Benjamin Sormonte and Elisa Marshall opened their first outpost in SoHo.
The duo has since released a cookbook and operate eight Manhattan cafes plus an outpost in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood and two other locations in Toronto and Montreal. Their Jersey City space officially opened on Valentine’s Day and celebrates Maman’s signature south of France charm.
The interior boasts blue and white tiles contrasted with vintage furnishings alongside the café’s custom toile printed espresso machines. Breakfast and brunch options at Maman include assorted pastries, croissants, and loaf cakes alongside coffees, espresso, teas, kombucha, and juices.
More substantial fare ranges from includes a daily quiche, a make-your-own omelet, or a breakfast sandwich with homemade bourbon bacon jam. Seasonal soups and salads rotate at the café, while a weekend brunch service menu includes eggs ratatouille or a brioche perdu of thick-cut challah bread with granola, lemon ricotta, blueberry basil compote, and hot honey.
Sweets from the bakery are undoubtedly a highlight, as treats like s’mores cookies, Nutella brownies, and banoffee beignets round out Maman’s experience. The Jersey City location is now open for pick-up, delivery, and indoor dining, with outdoor seating areas to be added during the warmer months.
Maman’s Jersey City hours run from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. on weekdays, with weekend service spanning 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
