One of the busiest stretches of Newark Avenue in Jersey City will be welcoming a new development as the hum of construction has begun at an India Square property.
Earlier this month, excavation work started at 785 Newark Avenue. Jersey Digs was the first to report on a proposal for the land over two years ago, a scheme which was eventually approved back in November of 2020.
The approvals for the development were obtained by an entity called 72 Holly Road LLC and the four-story project has been designed by New York-based firm GRO Architects. It calls for a modern building that rises 44 feet and includes space for a ground-floor restaurant, although no specific tenant has been announced just yet.
Nine residential units will be featured on the remaining floors, with five of them containing one bedroom and the remainder being studios. The structure is slated to sport bay windows on each side and utilize a sleek black-and-white exterior for a more modern look.
The development is situated in India Square, a neighborhood just west of Journal Square. The area’s portion of Newark Avenue is known for featuring a wide variety of Indian shops, markets, and restaurants.
An estimated completion date for the project has not been announced, nor have any details about an eatery that could be coming to the property.
