Two new veterinary clinics — one of which will be open late for emergencies — may soon fight like cats and dogs over Hoboken’s pampered pooches and cuddly kitties.

The Hoboken Vets Animal Clinic said on its Instagram page that it hopes to start accepting patients later this month. It’s located at 1125 Maxwell Lane in the Maxwell Place development, along a swath of retail space near the waterfront that includes businesses such as Massage Envy and 16 Handles ice cream.

On August 7, veterinary assistant Moira Connelly updated Jersey Digs, saying, “We hope to be seeing clients by late August.”

The practice’s website boasts an array of services, from imaging to travel certificates, and promises to separate dog and cat waiting rooms.

Connelly said the practice’s sister location opened in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, last year.

The Hoboken location will be open seven days per week, Connelly said. Hours will be Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9-4, and Sunday from 11-4.

Meanwhile, a different veterinary practice, the upcoming Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) at 14th Street and Willow Avenue, will answer the common pet owners’ question of what to do if their fur baby has an emergency in the middle of the night. Construction on VEG is progressing on the bustling corner next to the Malibu Diner and across the street from Trader Joe’s.

Rather than seeming worried about competition, Connelly suggested that the two new practices may work together at times. She said that if VEG is open at night, “Once they are operational, we hope to work with them for our patients who need overnight monitoring.”

VEG already has locations in Clifton, Manhattan, White Plains, Nanuet, and Boynton Beach, Florida (do they treat snowbirds?). While the Hoboken location doesn’t show up on their website yet, it says the others have hours during nights, weekends, and holidays.

The mile-square city currently has three other veterinary practices, including Interstate Vets (which makes house calls), but all are located south of Eighth Street. The upper portion of town has gained thousands of new residents in the past 15 years, with large developments like Hudson Tea, the Shipyard, and Park and Garden.

Here is one list of animal hospitals that can handle pet emergencies. According to their websites, the Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus and AERA in Fairfield are open 24 hours.
