After the cheese-fueled Planet Mac suddenly closed their doors late last year at 219 Washington Street, many wondered what was next for the storefront along Hoboken’s main drag. The answer comes in the form of a new seafood-inspired ramen restaurant, which opened their doors on Monday.

Just over ten days ago, a banner sign went up at the property heralding the arrival of something called South Street Fish & Ramen Co. While short on details, the restaurant promised to be “reeling in the finest ingredients” and they are now showing off their revamp and menu while some ongoing exterior work is wrapped up.

The nautically-themed eatery has a sleek modern look completed with sit down and take-out options consisting of, you guessed it, ramen-based dishes. They feature both chicken and pork stock options for broth, and proteins like braised pork and tofu are available to diners.

But the seafood at South Street Fish & Ramen Co. is the star. The restaurant’s namesake dish brings manila clams, baby scallops, and shrimp to the table, while options they dub “prized catch” come from family recipes featuring ahi tuna, salmon, crab, and more.

The most interesting combinations can be made through the restaurant’s “reel your own” option, which lets diners choose a poke bowl, sushi burrito, or salad format. From there, base choices include rice, green papaya or romaine kale, and the protein options are a seafood lover’s dream; they include ahi tuna, crabsticks, shrimp tempura, spicy crab, fish cake, and calamari, with pork katsu, eggplant tempura, and sweet potato tempura thrown in for good measure.

Up to four toppings can be added to the “reel your own,” including edamame, purple cabbage, oshinko, masago, hijiki, or pickled red cucumber. Customized sauces include spicy mayo, teriyaki, wasabi ranch, peanut sauce, ginger dressing, sriracha BBQ, and wasabi soy sesame.

The restaurant’s website is still under construction and delivery options will be up and running at a later date, but for now, South Street Fish & Ramen Co.’s soft opening is continuing through the remainder of this week.
