On October 15, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Audible CEO Bob Carrigan will cut the ribbon to launch The Pillars retail hub at 33 Washington Street. Audible has reimagined the 15,000-square-foot ground floor and the distinctive facade of their longtime headquarters, developing the space into a destination for local businesses and the community.

The Pillars will feature a central court housing Audible listening booths and three retail spaces with a fourth food and beverage space that will be announced soon. The new retail tenants will sublease from Audible, receiving support and subsidies through Audible’s Business Attraction Program.

“This project is the epitome of the high-caliber innovation and community-focused development that drives Newark forward,” commented Mayor Baraka. “When we invest to bring new amenities to our neighborhoods while creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs, it strengthens the fabric of our whole city. The Pillars adds to the vibrancy of Newark’s Arts and Education District.”

Audible has been headquartered in Newark since 2007 and has been a major contributor to the revitalization of Newark. The Pillars project at 33 Washington Street is only the latest. The company restored Innovation Cathedral in 2019 and helped transform Newark’s Harriet Tubman Square. Their Business Attraction Program and the Newark Artist Collaboration initiatives have added significant economic impact throughout the city.

“The Pillars represents a new paradigm for corporate investment in our headquarters city,” added Audible CEO Carrigan. “By transforming physical spaces and directly supporting local businesses with financial assistance through our Business Attraction Program, we’re building an ecosystem that sustains entrepreneurship, drives foot traffic, and celebrates community.”

The Pillars will open with three new businesses. Tansy is a woman-owned home goods and plant store that will feature classes on plant care and creative arts. Pooka Pure & Simple will offer bath and body products as well as DIY workshops. HealHaus is a wellness destination with classes and workshops on meditation, yoga and breathwork as well as a wellness cafe.
