Part of a mammoth industrial complex on West Side Ave in Jersey City could soon be home to hundreds of residents. A developer has applied to the Jersey City Zoning Board of Adjustment for approval to convert an existing warehouse into a two-story residential building.

A new five-story building will be coming to 429-437 Bergen Avenue. The development will consist of 72 residential units on the top four floors and 2,150 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor.

In 1997, the last light rail station in Jersey City was finished on West Side Avenue. Since then, the city has added more than 30,000 residents and development has expanded further west. To help accommodate this growth, the county has commissioned a study to better understand the costs of expanding the light rail to Route 440.

Urban Edge Properties announced yesterday that it has entered into a $43.7 million contract to purchase Hudson Mall in Jersey City. The property, located on Route 440, spans 383,000 square feet and contains anchor tenants Marshalls, Toys "R" Us, Staples, and Old Navy.

This week, City Council will vote on an ordinance that would facilitate the development of a brand new restaurant row on Jersey City’s West Side Avenue.
