Palermo’s Custom Cakes and Bakery is coming to Jersey City. Family-owned-and-operated for over 30 years in the Garden State, the second generation is now focused on expanding their presence and will open at 291 Grove Street later this spring. Bringing a bakery and more to the neighborhood, Palermo’s is an expert custom cake maker.
The original Palermo’s was opened in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, by Giovanna and Gennaro Bruno — Joanne and Jerry — and sold Italian desserts. Cakes were always a part of Palermo’s repertoire, but high-end custom cakes evolved as a specialty in earnest about 15 years ago. “It started very organically: my mother, myself, my brother, and a few associates designing and customizing high-end cake art,” Paul Bruno told Jersey Digs. “What started off as a complementary addition to our business grew into a main line of service and a staple part of the Palermo brand.”
Now with six locations across the state, Palermo’s is excited to expand in Jersey City and “wants to be a part of a thriving downtown as the area continues to become a strong center of commerce,” said Paul. The original shop in Ridgefield Park is still in operation and Palermo’s is also in Little Ferry, Union City, Wyckoff, River Vale, and Fair Lawn.
Palermo’s at 291 Grove Street will be a traditional bakery concept and offer gourmet coffees as well. Currently under construction, they expect to open May 1. While a custom cake for any occasion is the bakery’s bread and butter, Palermo’s cannoli, cheesecakes, fruit tortes, and cookies are just a few of the sweet treats that the staff can’t live without and soon Jersey City residents will have nearby.
