A new grocery store might be coming to suburban Essex County.

ShopRite of West Caldwell submitted a state flood hazard application in February that calls for “the construction of a new ShopRite Supermarket facility” on Bloomfield Avenue in the township, according to filings released by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

NJDEP records indicate that the application was approved in May, but do not show what exactly is being proposed or where on Bloomfield Avenue it would be located.

Property records state that a company named Sunrise Realty, LLC owns 880 Bloomfield Avenue in West Caldwell while Sunrise Market Development, LLC owns neighboring 900 and 924 Bloomfield Avenue. The Progress reported back in 2019 that West Caldwell’s municipal government and Sunrise Realty were negotiating at the time regarding the development of the parcels.

Both LLCs are registered out of the same address as West Caldwell’s longstanding Sunrise ShopRite location on nearby Passaic Avenue, which is known locally for its unique exterior pagoda design.

ShopRite has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
