A café inspired by southern France that started in Manhattan over a decade ago is expanding to New Jersey once again as Maman is coming to a storefront along Hoboken’s main drag.
Maman, which opened their first location in 2014, is slated to take over the entire ground floor at 110 Washington Street. The retail space formerly housed a Shaka Bowl location before that brand consolidated to the single Hoboken outpost that they still run at 720 Monroe Street.
The signage application for Maman was recently approved by Hoboken’s Historic Preservation Board. The bakery and breakfast-heavy business comes from the husband-and-wife team of Benjamin Sormonte and Elisa Marshall, who opened their first outpost in SoHo.
Breakfast and brunch options at Maman include assorted pastries, croissants, and loaf cakes alongside coffees, espresso, teas, kombucha, and juices. The café serves a daily quiche, a make-your-own omelet, or a breakfast sandwich with homemade bourbon bacon jam.
Seasonal soups and salads rotate at the café, while a weekend brunch service menu includes eggs ratatouille or a brioche perdu of thick-cut challah bread with granola, lemon ricotta, blueberry basil compote, and hot honey. Sweets from the bakery are undoubtedly a highlight, as treats like s’mores cookies, Nutella brownies, and banoffee beignets
Maman already has a New Jersey presence, launching their first Garden State outpost in Jersey City back in 2022. They have since added another spot at Palmer Square in Princeton, making the upcoming Hoboken spot their third New Jersey cafe.
There is no word on exactly when the Hoboken spin on Maman will be opening its doors, but construction is already taking place inside the storefront at the Washington Street property.
